The annual Hong Kong Chinese New Year market at Victoria Park opened yesterday despite the downpour.

According to Mingpao Daily, one stall owner sold out all his peach blossoms within the first day. It used to take him three. The stall owner Lau Hoi-to grew the 300 peach blossom trees himself in Tuen Mun. Each one sells for over HK$10,000.

Lau said that Sun Hung Kai Properties was among his customers.

Other stalls were less successful, such as those manned by students hoping to make some cash by selling tiger-themed toys, hats, and other knickknacks with auspicious-sounding names. Their stock was soaked through by yesterday's rain and so far are not as popular as expected.

Football commentator and advertising company owner Chan Chi-chun also set up a stall at the market to sell advertisement ideas.
