Hong Kong film festival a bit bloody but at least it's not boring

If you can handle corn syrup and ketchup, escape the heat this summer by ducking into a cinema for an hour or two of mind-expanding gore
Hong Kong Summer International Film FestivalWhat's better than a summer film festival? A summer film festival with kitsch Japanese schoolgirl gore, of course!
"Vampire Girl and Frankenstein Girl" is now playing at the Hong Kong Summer International Film Festival. The film is a low-tech, Tarantino-esque cult-film-in-the-making of the ketchup-spurting, plastic skin-ripping, fake limb-chopping variety. The latest offering from "Tokyo Gore Police" creator Yoshihiro Nishimura, "Vampire Girl" is exactly what fans of bloody spectacles would expect from the gore guru himself.

Read reviews of the film on Fantastic Fest, Film Junk, and Twitch which also has a trailer to give a taste of the film's sensory overload, but if you are not into this gore stuff be warned that this is quite stomach-churning and strictly recommended to gore fans only.

The rest of the festival's selection is decidedly more artsy and intellectual, but not boringly so. Sub-categories include 12 selections from Bollywood, films with a food theme (a chance to see "Babette's Feast" on big-screen) and a retrospect on Japanese director Ichikawa Jun (including "Tony Takitani" and "Osaka Story").

The Hong Kong Summer International Film Festival runs until September 7. Tickets available at all URBTIX counters.
