Top live music acts coming up in Hong Kong
Andrew Bird
Musical renaissance man Andrew Bird will play at Grappa's Cellar on January 27. The critically-lauded multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and whistler is classically trained and writes songs about esoteric subjects, but his fifth solo album "Noble Beast" released last year was called his "prettiest" and "most accessible" album by Rolling Stone. Bird's intellectual music translates well into live performance -- Filter Magazine says "onstage, [Bird] is animated and talkative; his shows are performances in every sense of the word. He amplifies emotion, and shares it."
January 27, tickets available at Owl City, Grappa's, and White Noise Records. More details at the gig's Facebook page.
Brian Eno's Music for Airports
Six of Hong Kong's most outstanding experimental musicians are putting on an audio-visual double tribute to electro-ambient godfather Brian Eno and to Hong Kong's old Kai Tak Airport. Live video projections and an electronic symphony playing Eno's "Music for Airports" combine to create a portrait of Kai Tak. Curated by Samson Young (on our Hot List), the performance also features S.T. (Cho Sai-Ho), Nerve (Steve Hui), Tang Lok Yin, Aenon Loo, and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.
January 31, tickets available through Urbtix. More details at Contemporary Musiking, Facebook page.
Rock To Gather
Hong Kong's loudest and most popular indie rock bands put on a mini-festival at Hang Out. Featured bands include pop punk group F.B.I, glam goth rock Velvette Vendetta, and hardcore Shepherds the Weak.
January 30, see ticketing info on this Alive Not Dead poster.
Hong Kong Sinfonietta for Kids: Classical Music for Babies
The Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s sell-out Classical Music for Babies shows are so popular among Hong Kong’s parenting set that they’re staging two additional performances.
For firm believers of the Mozart effect there’s his "Eine kleine Nachtmusik: 1st movement on the lineup," as well as Bach’s "Air on the G string" and Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake: Waltz."
January 29 – 30, tickets available through Urbtix. More details on the Hong Kong Sinfonietta website.
