Lau Fau Shan's Cinderella makeover: Dirty bay to become eco-culture park

The Planning Department will develop Lau Fau Shan into an eco-cultural park. The feat will be nothing short of a miracle.

Lau Fau Shan is known for its fresh seafood, especially its fertile oyster farms, but pollution from the Pearl River Delta and the aging rural population has turned the area into a bit of a wasteland. Save for a few busy restaurants in the area, what you mostly find in Lau Fau Shan is a polluted shadow of its former self. See the photos below taken at the end of last year at Lau Fau Shan.

The government's plans include dividing Lau Fau Shan into four zones in the 565 hectares of the northwestern New Territories, which covers the existing fish market, the wetland area in Tsim Bei Tsui, a green belt west of Tin Shui Wai New Town, and a coastal area near the entrance to the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor.

Amongst the attractions planned for the makeover are a pathway for pedestrians and cyclists to connect the area's different attractions, and transforming the former police station into a theme restaurant and exhibition center showcasing the history of oyster farming in the area.
