Celebrating Mother's Day in Ningxia and Heilongjiang
Hong Kong Arts Centre celebrates Mother's Day in Hong Kong this weekend with a focus on "Mothers and Daughters" in the far-flung regions of China. Many women in the remote Chinese provinces of Ningxia, Heilongjiang and Yunnan still live below the poverty line, with a daily income of less than US$1.25. Ningxia faces environmental problems such as drought, which negatively impact employment, health and education. Heilongjiang is challenged by misguided forestry and developmental policies, leading to land dispossession, cultural loss, and unemployment. In both instances, it is primarily women of ethnic minorities who have risen up to the challenge of adaptation and survival. Their stories will be told through the photography exhibition titled "Mothers and Daughters" at the Hong Kong Arts Centre. See excerpts from the insightful exhibit below. "Mothers and Daughters," presented by the EarthPulse Foundation. May 8 and 9, Pao Galleries, 5/F, Hong Kong Arts Centre.
