Liu Xiaobo candlelight vigil tonight
Protestors marched on January 1, 2010 in Hong Kong carrying a banner painted over with Liu Xiaobo's image.Tonight's “Release Liu Xiaobo” candlelight vigil outside the Legislative Council will see most of Hong Kong's pro-democracy activists braving the cold to show their support for the jailed dissident.
Ever since Liu was sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment in mainland China this past Christmas Day, he has become a poster boy for pro-democracy activists in China. Liu was jailed for co-authoring Charter 08, a direct appeal to the Chinese government for political reform signed by 10,000 people, including intellectuals and political activitists. His 11 year sentence is the longest ever handed down by the mainland Chinese government for subversion in over a decade, according to the New York Times.
The candlelight vigil in Hong Kong tonight is organised by the Hong Kong-based Charter 08 Campaign and supported by more than a dozen international and domestic non-governmental organisations. Held from 7-9pm, advocacy groups will give speeches and poetry recitations as well as performance art throughout the evening.
