Hong Kong National Day in the 'City of Sadness'
A corner of Hong Kong where immigrants from the mainland struggle to integrate
Despite its nickname, Tin Shui Wai is a picture perfect community.
With the city’s focus on the National Day celebrations on Hong Kong Island, I decided to visit Tin Shui Wai instead. Often called the “City of Sadness,” because of the widely reported family and social problems, Tin Shui Wai is a remote community where many immigrants from mainland China settle.
Often, immigrants are unable to fully integrate into Hong Kong society and have to survive on welfare.
On National Day, Tin Shui Wai was in a festive mood. The district government organized a grand carnival for the community with a flag raising ceremony, a uniform group parade, a lion dance contest, street performances and a variety show.
