Finalist team nine based their collection on Mickey Mouse.

Team two got into the finals with a collection based on the ever-quirky auteur Tim Burton.

Team two's collection evokes Tim Burton's dark but fanciful style.

Team three wowed judges with outfits based on late Canto-pop diva Anita Mui.

Team three's collection is based on Anita Mui, queen of Hong Kong's pop scene in the 1980s.

Team six got into the Fashion World Talent Award with a collection based on Mao Zedong.

Team six's named their Chinoiserie collection "Mao T."

The Fashion World Talent Awards was whittled down to 18 finalists after a cutthroat showdown at last week’s Hong Kong Fashion Week.

For the semifinals, 30 neophyte fashion designers, stylists and fashion photographers had to team up in groups of three. The teams were then given two weeks to turn around a four-outfit collection based on a historic figure of the past century.

Inspirations ran the gamut, from Mao Zedong to Margaret Thatcher, Mickey Mouse to Tim Burton. Check out the gallery above for a showcase of the winning looks.

Four styling teams and six individual contestants will go head to head at the Fashion World Talent Awards finals on March 19.
