The candlelight vigil to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown will be held tonight starting 8pm at Victoria Park. It is the only event of its sort held annually on Chinese soil and Hong Kong lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan predicts attendance will reach 100,000.

Last year the numbers were said to reach as high as 150,000 for the 20th anniversary of the crackdown. This year, the controversy over forced removal of the Goddess of Democracy statues and the refusal to admit sculptor Chen Weiming into Hong Kong have stoked the fires of pro-democracy sentiment in Hong Kong.

Apart from the Victoria Park candlelight vigil, a slew of events will be held to bring awareness to the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown and the pro-democracy cause, starting this afternoon:

4pm
Seminar on "Will there be vindication for June 4? When will there be vindication?" at Victoria Park's no.5 football field

5pm
Bicycle rally to commemorate June 4 starting on Shanghai Street

8pm
Candlelight vigil to commemorate the Tiananmen Square crackdown on June 4, 1989 at Victoria Park football fields

10pm
Post-80s generation discuss Hong Kong's political reform at a gathering next to the Victoria Park fountain

11pm
