End of an era: Hard Rock Cafe moves in on Lan Kwai Fong

Lan-kwai as we know it will never be the same again once American chain Hard Rock Cafe lands

Over the last three decades, Lan Kwai Fong has endeared itself to Hong Kong with its ever-evolving roster of restaurants and bars, each vying for customer attention with fun, creative dining and entertainment concepts. Come September, the nightlife strip is set to change forever with the opening of a new Hard Rock Cafe and a major rehaul of the landmarks California Tower and California Entertainment Building.

Hard Rock Cafe will be taking over the space currently occupied by the Hong Kong Brew House and The Cavern at LKF Tower after landlords doubled and tripled the rent for the popular bars respectively. FINDS is another LKF establishment (having been there for about six years now) that will be relocating to The Luxe Manor due to rent hikes.

Rhys Adams, marketing director for the Hong Kong Brew House, told the South China Morning Post that "'Hard Rock Cafe is the wrong concept to bring to Lan Kwai Fong,' because Hard Rock is too family-orientated. The Hong Kong Brew House will relocate to Hollywood Road. On the other hand, Father of Lan Kwai Fong Allen Zeman said Hard Rock moving in 'won't hurt.'"

Before that happens, work will get started on the long-awaited merge of California Tower and the California Entertainment Building into one 24-storey tower featuring outdoor terraces and rooftop gardens.

This summer will be the last chance to party in the "old" Lan-kwai -- the perfect excuse to go harder.
