Incomparable beefy tastiness that's good for you too.

Wagyu beef in Hong Kong gets gobbled up like crazy in the winter.

According to traditional Chinese medicine wisdom, eating beef nourished the "qi" and enriches the blood. It is best consumed on chilly days to keep our bodies strong and warm.

Hong Kong being a gourmet city prefers the best kind of beef, the melt-in-the-mouth, pungent-with-veins-of-fat kind of beef: wagyu. The plethora of bizarre wagyu beef dishes that have sprung up in eateries in recent years, such as Yan To Heen’s wagyu dumplings and wagyu and goose liver clay pot rice, is testimony to that.

Hong Kong gets another blast of the chills this week from a cold front, according to latest weather reports, so there's no better time to indulge in a little bovine goodness. Here are our picks of the two hottest tables serving wagyu beef, and other places to get your beef around Hong Kong:

Wagyu Kaiseki Den

Displaying your name on one of Wagyu Kaiseki Den's mini fridges containing your personal piece of top-grade wagyu beef at this high-roller's club has become the latest status symbol. On our last visit we spotted "Tony Chan" labelled on a piece of beef in the restaurant’s glassed fridges that remind the macabre-minded of a sort of luxury beef morgue. The restaurant refused to confirm that it belongs to the notorious "feng shui Chan".

The menu changes daily, but it usually covers all the bases of Japanese luxury foods: sea urchin, abalone, black truffle. HK$1,680 per person.

Wagyu

It may call itself Wagyu but this Wyndham Street institution is known for other things: a de facto expat bar, a place to see and be seen.

Apart from wagyu, their eclectic menu includes burgers, brunches, burritos ... you name it.

Other recommendations:

Yan To Heen: Steamed rice with goose liver and mince wagyu beef served in casserole, HK$280.

Wa-En: Wagyu yakiniku, approximately HK$300 per head.

Wa San Mai: Japanese saga A4 wagyu teppanyaki dinner set, HK$780 per head.
22/F East Point Centre, 555 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay, tel +852 2831 8989

Megu: A5 wagyu steak kagerou yaki on a Hennessy flambé stone grill, approximately HK$1,000 per head.
Shop R002-3, Elements, Kowloon Station Airport Express, 1 Austin Road West, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel +852 3743 1421

Intercontinental The Steak House Winebar + Grill: Australian and Japanese wagyu, HK$1,280 - 1,880 per head.
