Tsim Chai Kee takes the shrimp wonton -- a ubiquitous local grub -- and makes it better. A lot better.
While the average wontons come in bite-sized morsels, Tsim's wontons are famous for being ridiculously oversized. Think ping pong balls crammed with fresh shrimp and minced pork.
The wonton recipe is a simple one, but fresh, well-executed wontons are often hard to find. Judging by the long lunchtime queues and the fawning local and international press (it's been raved about from the Michelin guide to Japanese tourist magazines), Tsim Chai Kee's king prawn wonton noodles have nailed it.
Want more variety? Tuck into their three toppings noodle for a satisfying portion of wontons, fish balls (also supersized) and slices of fresh beef all in a rich meaty broth. Tsim Chai Kee is relatively tourist-friendly with a comprehensive English menu and a good level of hygiene, but the atmosphere is old-school Hong Kong with somewhat brusque service, long benched seating and waitresses shouting orders directly to the kitchen.
