World Cup 2010 in 3-D
Imagine these guys bursting out of your TV!
Football fans will know that the finals draw for the sport’s World Cup 2010 event takes place on December 4, but they may not be aware of another part of the near future that just got even closer after Sony announced a deal to cover the tournament in 3-D.

Up to 25 of the matches taking place in South Africa next summer will form the vanguard of Sony’s drive to get the third dimension into living rooms worldwide before long.

World Cup 2010 in 3-D
After the recent rash of 3-D cinema releases and a slew of electronics companies announcing 3D television sets for release next year, it’s inevitable that the home front will see the next push.

As for the football, Sony’s deal with governing body FIFA will see it use the 3-D footage of games to produce the official movie of the tournament for release sometime after the final on July 11 next year.

And, in a parallel bid to get fans associating Sony products with the game, the company is sponsoring the FevaCasters program, which has young video reporters (2-D only for now, alas) worldwide chewing the fat online about the latest World Cup developments.

Sony even has a PS3 channel located in its PlayStation Home virtual internet world, so it seems no stone has been left unturned in getting word out about the future of sports being in multiple dimensions.
