Videos: Dance competitions turn up the heat
It doesn’t matter where you are in Asia: Turn on the TV and flip through the channels, and you’re likely to come across someone poppin'-and-lockin' or bumpin'-and-grindin'. In these dance competition videos there are some prime examples of both, along with some cricket and fire dancing thrown in for good measure.
India: Dance India Dance
Young upstarts learn from the gurus on India’s largest dance-based reality show. Choreographer Remo pops and locks, and then young Prince tries to one-up his moves. Hard to say who rocked it harder with so many pops and locks going on.
China: Belly Dance Superstars
Belly dancing is popular among the conservative Chinese. In this dance competition video clip, instructor Wen Kexin shimmies to an Egyptian “Fire Dance” and nabs the top prize.
Philippines: Shall We Dance?
It’s a Filipino version of Dancing With The Stars: Celebrities are paired with ballroom instructors. Each week, the audience and three judges send a couple home. In this clip, Mystica and Miguel score high marks for their sweeping moves.
Malaysia: So You Think You Can Dance
American Idol’s Simon Fuller brought his dance series to Malaysia in 2007. The contestants boogie through auditions, callbacks, boot camp, and finally live performances. I’d give this group’s gamelan remix a 9 out of 10.
India: Dance Premier League
A dance show based on the rules of cricket (at least its not baseball.) Six teams compete in rounds that are scored like cricket runs. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a cameo and shuffled awkwardly to the Bollywood beats. Not a pretty sight.
Japan/Asia: Gatsby Styling Dance Contest
This final dance competition video features a challenge sponsored by Gatsby hair products. The dancers had to create routines with hairstyling motions to win the top prize. Winners from all over Asia converged in Shibuya for haircuts before competing in the final dance-off. As one might expect, the grand prize included a hamper of Gatsby products.
