Caught on film: Spaceships, fireballs and UFOs
Last week a UFO shut down Hangzhou airport in China. This week another UFO was sighted over a park in Chongqing. What's going on here? Even with the recent spat of UFOs in China, they aren't the only sightings the region has seen in recent years. Last September, Japan’s first lady caused a media frenzy when she claimed to have flown on an alien spaceship. “While my body was asleep, I think my soul rode on a triangular-shaped UFO and went to Venus,” Miyuki Hatoyama wrote in her book.
(Read details about some of the files about UFO incidents in Asia that we found recently at the UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico.)
Now, we're not ones to doubt Miyuki (who, incidentally, also claimed Tom Cruise was Japanese in a previous life), but unfortunately she offered no evidence to back up her close encounter claim.
Others, on the other hand, have. There’s been a boom of flying saucers caught on video in Asia. Some are worthy of the Twilight Zone; others are eye-rollingly dubious. Here are some of our favorites, from most to least credible.
China: A hotbed for flying saucers
VIDEO from Allnewsweb
2009 was China’s Year of the UFO. In August, thousands of Shandong residents witnessed two large saucers, and at least six separate sightings were reported in Changsha. However, the most compelling incident occurred in Deqing last July. During a solar eclipse, 22 students witnessed a morphing, glowing object in the sky, and nine of them captured the unusual visitor on film.
Las Piñas, Philippines: Great balls of fire
VIDEO by tonyisrael
In 2000, Tony Israel woke from a nap and noticed two brilliant red-orange lights on either side of the moon. He grabbed his camcorder and captured 30 minutes of the erratic motion. Investigators and UN officials grilled Tony and examined the footage thoroughly, but an explanation remains elusive.
Singapore: Blazing red flying object
VIDEO from brintonsdad
In May 2009, Singaporean commuters watched a fiery orb light up the sky for over 15 minutes. Some cried UFO, but most explained the close encounter as a falling satellite, the sun reflecting off a jet engine’s exhaust, or a reflection from a weather balloon.
Hanoi, Vietnam: A fleet in formation
VIDEO from stevenng2020
In 2007, a fleet of tiny moving lights was sighted in Vietnam. A formation of saucers, ready to attack? Not likely. The illuminations look too much like khom loy, or lanterns launched into the night sky.
Nagoya, Japan: Blurry light in the clouds
VIDEO from panicandfear
A Nagoya resident filmed what he calls a UFO with his cell phone camera. YouTubers disagree and suggest it was sunlight bouncing off the surface of a weather balloon. One commenter put it best: “OMG it’s a BFL -- Blurry Flashing Light!”
La Carmina writes about Harajuku pop culture and all things spooky-cute. She is the author of three books about Japanese pop culture and food, including Cute Yummy Time and Crazy Wacky Theme Restaurants: Tokyo – for which she did all the photos and illustrations. Both books were released in October, accompanied by a US major city book tour.
