Budget bus travel for beginners
A bus departing from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet, Thailand. You might think buses are dirty, smelly, uncomfortable, slow and generally the last form of transport you would want to consider using to get around Asia. And, in some cases, you would probably be right. But for the most part, bus travel is dirt cheap, and can give you a great view not only of the terrain through which you're moving, but also of local people in their everyday environments.
Read our six tips on how to have a smoother ride.
Deals on wheels
This is easy in Asia where bus travel is cheap. "It’s a matter of comparing prices at the bus stations," says Dubai-based travel writer Lara Dunston, who is embarking on a grand tour of the world as part of a project she's calling Grantourismo. "In some destinations, you will have very little choice, as there may only be one company, but in some places, there may be a handful of buses going to the one destination, and you might even be able to bargain." Also, check online travel forums for rider tips. Virtual Tourist community members have posted reviews on numerous bus trips throughout Asia, such as one from Bangkok to Laos for US$6 with dinner included.
Don't dress to excess
Because you can never predict whether the air conditioning or heating will work, wear comfy layers so you can remove or add clothes, Dunston says.
Pack wisely
Dunston suggests bringing a blow-up pillow, books and an iPod. Also make sure to pack a big bottle of water and (non odorous or gas-inducing) snacks, especially some that can be shared. "Strangers will share gum, sweets, and other snacks, and you should do the same," she says.
Ride shotgun
Always sit at the very front of the bus beside the driver, Dunston says. You not only get the best views, you’re the first off the bus and will therefore be first to reach the toilets and food at the service station stops. "The downside is that light sleepers might find headlights and the noise from the radio keeping the driver awake a tad annoying at night, so take ear plugs and an eye mask," she adds.
Use caution
Keep your hand luggage locked and your valuables close, Dunston advises. "Solo women travelers should arrive early and try to sit beside another woman," she says. "For long distance rides, it’s a good idea to befriend people in the seats around you and they’ll look out for you."
Prepare for some bumps in the road
"Don't leave home without a sense of humor, flexibility and patience," says Atlanta-based travel consultant Ann Lombardi, who runs the company and website The Trip Chicks. When it comes to bus travel, expect the unexpected -- broken toilets, sick passengers or delays due to weather or engine trouble. Take a deep breath, relax and try to enjoy the ride.
