Where will we be going and what will we be doing in 2010? We spoke with Simon Westcott, Managing Director at the boutique and luxury hotel specialist Mr & Mrs Smith, to see what he thinks will be the popular choices next year. Westcott is also the ex-Global Publisher of the Lonely Planet brand, so what he doesn't know about the world's travel markets is not worth knowing.

Travel becoming an 'involved adventure'

Simon Westcott: "There is a travel phenomenon where people are more informed travellers and they are researching more before they even set foot. Travel is becoming a more involved adventure which includes knowing more about the best rooms, restaurants, local culture and activities, ecological impact of hotels, style and events."

'Wild-bush luxury' travel

Simon: Wild-bush luxury is another trend where travellers are looking for remote destinations, away from the hustle and bustle and embracing the natural environment. Sal Salis Nigaloo Reef in Western Australia is a striking meeting point of terrain with desert, beach and reef.

Nihiwatu in the Sumba island in Indonesia is another eco-hotel in the collection built entirely from locally sourced materials, and staff are strongly involved in conserving the local island forests and helping the local tribes people."

Foodies hit the road

Simon: "Food travel is another trend that is picking up with destination restaurants like the Royal Mail Hotel, and with the rise of great chefs in the region hotels are tying up with restaurants for gourmet stays."

Travel for events and festivals

Simon: "Events and festivals are also taking travellers to new or known places whether for family or friend’s weddings; food, film or music festivals; or traditional celebrations likes the various New Year’s such as Songkran in Thailand."
