The Longest Way 1.0 - one year walk/beard grow time lapse from Christoph Rehage on Vimeo.

In Fall 2007, Christoph Rehage took the first steps in an attempt to walk from Beijing to his home in Germany. The ensuing trek lasted one year and covered 4500km, but Rehage cut the walk short upon discovering he'd left behind the one thing most important to him (watch the vid to find out what that is, OK its "love.") This fascinating timelapse video documents the German's walk across China from Beijing to Urumqi.

World walks are undertaken for a variety of reasons, though in almost all cases the walker discovers that the journey ends up being more important than the destination.

Steve Vaught made a 4828km trek from his Oceanside, Calif., home to Manhattan in 2005 to lose weight. At the start of his walk Vaught weighed 410 pounds. By the time he reached Manhattan he'd dropped 100 pounds.

Arthur Blessit holds the Guiness World Record for the longest walk -- in 1969, in the name of religion, he carried a cross 61,319km across 52 countries.

Teacher Xie (seen in Rehage's video) has been walking all over China since 1983, for perhaps the best reason of all -- simply because he wants to.

finding the way to the way, rather in the east than in the west. It is not by coincindence that it is the version 1.0, but nobody knows how 1.1 will look like. After my walk from Eu to India, many things had changed at home, but mostly me. So heading out again, I might take my family along this time, and for us, it would be 2.0...
