Help CNNGo conquer Asia in 'Monopoly City Streets'

Hasbro teams with Google Maps to take Monopoly global
Time for a bit of Hong Kong monopolizing.

Monopoly City Streets is an online worldwide game of Monopoly based on Google Maps. What does that mean exactly? Only that you can buy nearly any street, anywhere in the world and plop down some highrises to earn cash. The game will be free to play until early January 2010, after which it will net a US$5.95 monthly fee.

The gameplay is fairly straightforward (when it works; the servers have struggled under the crush of 1.7 million hits since its September 9th launch) and the object is to amass the largest fortune by January, buying up streets, placing properties, negotiating with other players, sabotaging their buildings, and managing your properties.

Why am I excited about the prospect of a worldwide Monopoly game? Because it not only satisfies my desire for world domination, there's also the prospect of teaming up with friends and other CNNGo readers to monopolize Asia. Unfortunately, our six main cities of Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai, Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong are being rapidly bought up, so we'll have to start small on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

Game Plan
  • Register a profile name in the game that identifies you as a reader of CNNGo such as "CNNGoFan_Tom". This will tell other CNNGoFan players not to sabotage your properties and help us work together.
  • Buy up some streets around Hong Kong and place some properties to start generating rental revenues.
  • Place residences on your streets to generate more daily income.
  • The more you play the more you get Chance Cards. Chance cards will allow you to either sabotage other players or place buildings on your properties to guard against sabotage.
  • Once you have generated sufficient income, start making offers on other non-CNNGoFan's streets. If they don't respond in seven days to your offer, you will claim their property.
  • Post your name and money earned in the comments below to show everybody else how well you're doing and if you're the biggest CNNGoFan Monopoly City Streets player.

As a side note, the game is currently a bit buggy and slow as they work out the kinks. Give it a week or so and they should have things ironed out.

See you all in Hong Kong (strictly outside business hours, of course.)

First Hong Kong, then the rest of Asia.
