Avatards: DVD release is marked with world's worst cosplay in Tokyo

A Tokyo electronics store jumps the blue face paint bandwagon as Cameron releases the "Avatar" DVD and mentions a possible sequel

April 22 wasn’t notable just for being Earth Day, but also for the global DVD and Blu-ray release of "Avatar", the 3-D epic from James Cameron.

To mark the milestone for the multi-billion-dollar juggernaut, Cameron told the press of his plans for at least one sequel featuring even more of the tedious moralizing.

And in celebration, one of Japan’s biggest electronics retailers pushed the boat out by forcing its staff to wander the streets dressed as Na’vi holding ‘on-sale today’ signs taped to their makeshift spears. The two uncomfortable-looking staffers at Bic Camera’s Yurakucho branch in central Tokyo at least didn’t have to go totally native and had blue raingear to protect against the city’s current foul weather.

Still, we wonder what Jake Sully et al would make of their decidedly un-eco-friendly footwear -- chunky blue Crocs knockoffs. We feel for them. Pandora it ain’t.
