Faux-sushi kids face humiliation or risk of drowning in soya sauce
Are these cute? Maybe, maybe not. Who are we to judge? As Halloween approaches, the scramble for costume ideas has officially begun. If you have a kid running around the house, why not dress them up as a prawn, fortune cookie or sushi roll? What could be cuter?
OK, almost anything could be cuter. But if you must sushify your child, Etsy.com sells the kiddy costumes ranging from US$25 to US$30 and offers international shipping.
Here's a few suggestions as to where to find alternatives to dressing your kid -- or yourself -- as something edible and smelly. Or maybe that's what you're going for. Whatever works, here's some options.
Hong Kong: The year-round costume street Pottinger St between Queen's Road and Wellington is always a good bet, or there's some truly unique market stalls for those with more time to put something together.
Shanghai: The big fabric market at 399 Lujiabang Lu. Here you can get your own prawn costumes made.
Tokyo: Don Quijote stores probably have the widest collection of costumes in Tokyo. But of course, there's always the cosplay route.
Bangkok: Not many specific costume shops aside from the traditional Thai outfits. For those feeling posh, why not get a high society rent-a-shopper to put something together?
Singapore: There's Costumes & Mascots (Beach Centre #01-03, 15 Beach Road, tel: +65 6299 0882) and The Costumes Shop (Golden Landmark Hotel #03-33, 390 Victoria Street, tel: +65 6292 5539.) Mustafa is the Wal-Mart of Singapore, creative minds can probably pull something together there.
