Oscars fashion: Who should be wearing whom?

Glamorous designers, sexy actresses; here's our wish list for the red carpet parade on Oscar night

If ever there was a night to flaunt what you got, it's Oscars night on March 7. These Asian fashion labels and designers are the cream of the crop. Their celebrity followings also prove their glam pedigree. So by way of fulfilling a few designer-actress combo fantasies we've been harboring, here's our wish list for the Hollywood red-carpet. Let the parade begin...

Jason Wu (Taiwan/New York)
Jason Wu (Taiwan/New York)

Couture Chops: Born in Taiwan, Wu (check out CNNGo's interview with Jason Wu) immigrated to Canada at the age of nine and then started his own line in New York in 2006. His dresses are a mixture of youthful exuberance and curiosity in texture and shape with exaggerated bustles, exotic trimmings and swathy layers in ultra-luxe fabrics.

Claim to fame: Well, would a nod from Michelle Obama by wearing his gown to the inaugural ball in 2009 be enough of an accolade? No? Ok, how about also wearing him on the cover of Vogue, then when in England to meet the Queen and then to the Royal Opera?

Oscars red-carpet wish: Calling Ms Cruz, Ms Mulligan, and Ms Gyllenhaal! Seriously, if he isn't on the red carpet somewhere then I call conspiracy.

Available at: Lane Crawford Hong Kong: Podium 3, ifc mall, 8 Finance Street, Central, Tel: +852 2118 3388, www.jasonwustudio.com.

Prabal Gurung
Prabal Gurung (Nepal/New York)

Couture chops: The freshest of the bunch, Gurung was born in Singapore, raised in Nepal and studied in New Delhi before taking the plunge to base himself in New York City. But even with only three seasons under his belt, this designer drapes gowns as if he had been a seamstress to a royal in a past life. His newest collection sees dresses that are given a Midas touch as they glisten like liquid metal cascading to the floor.

Claim to Fame: Clients include Oprah and Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe (who has dressed Demi Moore in his pieces).

Oscars red-carpet wish: Zoe Saldana. Although it is less of a fantasy than a hopeful reality since the "Avatar" actress is a huge fan and sat front row at the last show looking for dresses.

Available at: Harvey Nichols in Hong Kong, The Landmark, 15 Queen's Rd, Central, Tel: +852 3695 3388,  www.prabalgurung.com.

Lie Sang Bong
Lie Sang Bong (Korea/Paris)

Couture Chops: He is the biggest break-out South Korean designer in the world, and has been showing his label in Paris for the past seven years. He is noted for a unique panache that combines elegance with futurism that has given him the name the Korean McQueen (referring to the revered British designer who recently shocked the couture world with his suicide).

Claim to fame: Actresses Yoon Eun Hye, Seo In Young, figure skater Kim Yu Na, actress Juliette Binoche, and pop stars Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

Oscars red-carpet wish: Fergie from Nine. The singer has already shown an affinity for risky choices, and Lie might actually be a glamorous upgrade of what we've seen her in before.

Available at: 15 locations across South Korea. Hyundai Department Store HQ Apgujeong Dong, Gangnam Gu, Seoul, Tel: +82 3438 6134, www.liesangbong.com.

Frankie Xie
Frankie Xie for Jefen (China/Paris)

Couture Chops: Xie spent 10 years in the industry in Japan including attending the prestigious Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo before beginning his own line in his native Beijing in 2000. He is the first Chinese designer to ever show on the official Paris calendar and has done so since 2007. The voluminous fur capelets he shows are a fashion force to be reckoned with and can easily bump up the glam factor during a chilly awards season.

Claim to fame: Thai Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana counts herself as a fan and attends his shows regularly to help pad out her dress collection.

Oscars red-carpet wish: There is a definite peppy vibe in the short-length dresses that would serve Harry Potter star Emma Watson well.

Available at: F3 Hongqiao Friendship Shopping Center No. 6, Zunyi South Road, Shanghai, Tel: +86 21 62700000, www.jefen.com.

Dorian Ho
Dorian Ho (Hong Kong)

Couture Chops: Ho debuted in 2001 and has already been invited to show at nearly every fashion week in the Asian pond including Shanghai, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and Australia. Although he can whip up princess-worthy dresses that would make Cinderella tell godmother to put a sock in it and go home, he also brings in his Chinese sensibilities with a separate line that incorporates inventive East-meets-West takes on Cheongsam.

Claim to fame: Celebrity clients include Tang Wei, Co Co Lee, and Vivien Chow.

Oscars red-carpet wish: Nicole Kidman has pulled of Cheongsam before and could do it again but nominated director Kathryn Bigelow would look ravishing in one of the red sweeping brocade gowns.

Available at: Podium 3, ifc mall, 8 Finance Street, Central, tel: +852 2118 3388, www.dorianho.net.

Guo Pei
Guo Pei (China)

Couture Cuts: Perhaps the only couturier on this list in the truest sense, Guo Pei established her brand in 1996 and is considered to be the most talented designer in China. Her creations are enchanting and brimming with so much artistic endeavor they are guaranteed to draw sharp breaths upon sight, as well as the attention of every eye within a 10km radius.

Claim to fame: Pei is on a first-name basis with the tops stars including Dong Qin, and often makes custom pieces for Zhang Ziyi. Decked in crystals, the robe that singer Song Zuying donned at the Beijing Olympics was rumored to be worth RMB 1 million.

Oscars red-carpet wish: There are not many Hollywood actresses with the regal-but-don't-dare-cross-me-or-I-will-bitch-slap-you-into-yesterday diva attitude to pull this off, but if it would be anyone it would be the statuesque Cate Blanchett.
