Tickets for Richard Branson's cross dressing flight on sale now
Branson posing with Air Asia stewardesses. Come May 1, he will look just like them.Anyone who wants to be served by Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson in cabin crew drag on a 13-hour flight from London to Kuala Lumpur can purchase their tickets at airasiago.com now.
UPDATE: The flight will now depart from London's Stansted airport on July 4. The flight was planned for May 1 but was postponed, according to an Air Asia statement, due to difficulty in securing flights into London as well as accommodation in the city over the bank holiday weekend and the Royal Wedding.
A total of 180 tickets is up for grabs, and all proceeds collected from the sale of seats will go to Virgin Unite, Branson’s non-profit organization.
Guests that had already purchased charity tickets via the site are entitled to a full refund, the Air Asia statement said, or have the choice of transferring tickets to the new date.
Flight-only tickets start at GBP4,500 (around US$7,361). One-way tickets with accommodation start at GBP5,200 (approximately US$8,510).
Branson’s stunt is the price he has to pay after losing a bet to AirAsia owner Tony Fernandes over whose Formula 1 team performed better last season.
Branson backs Virgin Racing, while Fernandes is the team principle of Lotus Racing. Both teams were 2010 F1 Championship neophytes. CNN is a minor sponsor/advertiser of Lotus.
At the start of the season, Branson and Fernandes wagered that the loser of the bet would have to dress and serve as a flight attendant on the winner’s airline. Both team ended the season with zero points, but Lotus had better finishing positions overall.
If seeing Sir Richard in drag is not entertaining enough, the magic show and the live band performance scheduled for the flight should make up for it.
Passengers on the flight also get to bid for the chance to shave Branson's legs.
"As an AirAsia flight attendant, Richard would have to comply to our grooming standards, and that includes shaving his legs,'' said Fernandes.
Thankfully for Branson (and perhaps for us all), he will be allowed to keep his facial hair.
The bidding will take place before the AirAsia flight leaves Stansted Airport.
A charity auction will be held at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel & Spa in Malaysia after the flight on May 2 as part of the same charity drive. Items on sale include personal items from the two airline magnates, as well as signed parts from a Team Lotus race car.
