An insider's audio tour of Akihabara, Tokyo

Tokyo Realtime delivers an aural trip round Tokyo's notorious 'Electric Town'
Lose yourself in Tokyo with an iPod and a pair of headphones.

Two years on from the street killings that shocked a nation, word on the street has it that Akihabara, Tokyo's Mecca for anime and gaming fanatics, is set to reopen its Sunday ‘pedestrian paradise’ shopping areas, so what better time to get out and burn some shoe leather on an insider’s audio tour of the district?

Those in the know will already be aware of the excellent Tokyo Realtime: Kabukicho audio guide from White Rabbit Press, a no-holds-barred guide that has already been up for awards this year.

The neatly packaged CD version.

Happily, the Akihabara version joining it for physical purchase ($18) or download ($12) carries on in the same, entertaining and knowledgeable vein.

The beautifully packaged CD version includes all the audio for transfer to your MP3 player of choice, a map (waterproof, of course) and a booklet filled with choice images of Akiba.

Whether you go for that or the download, you get the same guide -- delivered by Otaku-in-Chief Patrick W. Galbraith and a cast of guests -- that supplies the straight dope on the area.

We won’t spoil it by revealing the plot here, but we can tell you Akihabara is about a heck of a lot more than obsessive geekery, sleaze and kebab stands. This virtual tour is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Tokyo.
