One's for luxury lovers, one's for value seekers, but both of these new Bangkok hotels have style

The 'hostel for people who hate hostels' now has a second location, while the world-famous Kempinski brand opens its first Thailand-based property at Siam Paragon's back door
It’s been a rough year for Bangkok, with the global economic downturn and ongoing political strife. Nevertheless the nation’s tourism industry is fighting hard to convince tourists to come back. The good news is that travelers who do decide to return have two new venues to choose from: the luxurious Siam Kempinski, which opened in July, and the second branch of the city’s coolest hostel, Lub D.

Siam Kempinski Bangkok
Siam Kempinski: European luxury

It’s been a while since Bangkok has seen the opening of a new five-star luxury chain, making the arrival of the Siam Kempinski, which began operations last month, all the more exciting.

It is the first Kempinski property in Thailand and mixes modern luxury with ancient Thai art overtones. Sure, that’s been done before. Many times. But this place is pretty special as it’s more like a resort than a city hotel. So go ahead and admire the paintings and sculptures on the way to your suite overlooking the oasis of gardens and pools, dine on European and Thai classics or slip into The Spa for an afternoon of relaxation.

Just don't get so comfortable that you forget about all those luxury brand shops right at your back door. This hotel is situated right smack next to Siam Paragon -- we’re told there will be a skybridge built at some point -- which will likely send this new hotel to the top of the "Best of Bangkok" lists pretty fast. The Siam Kempinski is now offering a "third night free" opening promotion.

Lub D Bangkok
Lub D: The sequel

Let’s move to the other end of the price spectrum. If you plan on spending most of your travel budget on shopping and eating but don't want the typical hostel experience, check out Lub D's new location. Everything from the original Lub D off Silom Road is right there in Siam, including that sleek industrial look, comfortable lounge area and hip, helpful staff. And of course, free WiFi and cheap beer are also high selling points you won't find in too many five-star establishments.

The new location is opposite National Stadium, close to the BTS Skytrain and a short walk to Siam Square and the malls of Rajaprasong. There are four-bed dorms, economy twin rooms, doubles and, our favorite, the queen-size bed room with a private bathroom and LCD TV. August rates range from 525 baht per night for the dorm to 1,680 baht for the double deluxe.
