A cliched holiday treat we will whole-heartedly devour

One Bangkok chef has given the traditional Christmas pudding a gourmet infusion
Christmas puddingTopped with fine vanilla sauce and handmade brandy butter, this is one slab of Christmas pudding we might consider eating all year.

Right up there with egg nog, there’s a reason Christmas pudding isn’t called “every day pudding.” Frankly, it’s just not that exciting and really, let’s be honest, kind of weird.

But the Dusit Thani Bangkok’s executive pastry chef, Slawek Golaszewski, has given us a reason to indulge in the traditional treat this year thanks to his gourmet take, dubbed “Christmas Pudding Extraordinaire!” (Exclamation point is theirs. We just can't get that enthusiastic over steamed pudding.)

For those not familiar with the dessert, it’s made with dried fruits, breadcrumbs, spices, eggs and nuts -- much like fruitcake -- and raw fat from beef or mutton. It takes a good five hours to cook and is usually moistened with citrus fruit juice, brandy and other alcohol. Besides the alcohol part, it all sounds pretty unappetizing.

But Chef Slawek’s Christmas pudding is surprisingly very tasty. He doesn’t break with tradition, yet he’s given it that gourmet touch only a trained pasty chef can manage. This includes the made-from-scratch vanilla sauce and handmade brandy butter.

The "Christmas Pudding Extraordinaire" is 450 baht per set, available from now until December 31.
