It’s Bangkok’s major corporations that usually steal the headlines for their eco-friendly marketing moves. So we’ve decided to focus on three small initiatives that are quietly making our city a little bit greener.

Trash Chic

We can’t get enough of this recycled product line by Thai eco designer Anusorn Ngernyuang. Made mostly of discarded rice bags, Global Trash Chic  features everything from purses, suitcases and jewelry boxes to stools, teddy bears and aprons.

The items make great gifts or souvenirs as they’re incredibly colorful and feature iconic Thai images like stupas, elephants and even Thai food. The brand recently moved its shop from Reflections hotel in Ari to the fourth floor of Bayoke Tower 2.

Available in Moody, a shop on the fourth floor of Baiyoke Tower 2, 222/426 Ratchapraprop Road. Tel +66 (0)2 272 6300

It’s not so much what Bangkok boutique hotel Phra Nakorn Norn Len is doing to save the environment but rather what it isn’t -- polluting. Located in Bangkok’s old city, its owners have recreated the spirit of a small and traditional Thai community.

Phra Nakorn Norn Len isn't fancy, but rather tries to promote a healthy lifestyle while having a minimal impact on the environment. Smoking is not only frowned upon but forbidden and don’t ask for the remote as there are no TVs.

What we love most are the organic roof top garden, shady courtyard and 100 percent fresh meals and fruit drinks made in Phra Nakorn Norn Len's small cafe.

46 Thewet Soi 1, Banglumphoo, Tel +66 (0)2 628 8188

Tourists and locals looking to get around Bangkok's historic Rattanakosin "island" can sign out free bikes and tour the neighborhood on their own juice on designated  trails instead of hopping in a belching tuk tuk or taxi.

Just leave your Thai ID or a copy of your passport at one of eight service counters in the Rattanakosin area between 10am and 6pm dailys (extended to 8pm on weekends), including the Grand Palace, National Theatre and Bangkok City Hall.

We just wish they’d expand the project to some other popular city neighborhoods, though admittedly it takes a brave soul to fearlessly pedal among Bangkok's seemingly insane drivers. For more information, including a map of Rattanakosin, check out Bangkoktourist.com.
