From elephant football to tug-of-war, Thailand's national animal is celebrated by thousands in this annual event

Hundreds of elephants and thousands of people flooded into Thailand’s northeastern Surin province last weekend for the annual three-day Surin Elephant Roundup.

Domestic and foreign tourists spent the weekend feeding and riding Thailand’s national animal, many taking plenty of photos and videos alongside adorable baby pachyderms with bows in their hair, as well as long tusked super jumbos.

On each day of the festival there were special events such as a giant elephant buffet, elephant races, an elephant football game, tug of war matches between elephants and humans and war re-enactments harking to the days when elephants were used in battle.

There were also, of course, plenty of elephant themed souvenirs. Elephant tail hair rings, anyone?
