Suan Lum is much more than just a shopping venue for last-minute souvenirs. Opened in 2001, it offers a comfortable alternative to the hot and crowded Jatujak weekend market.
Its centerpiece is a large courtyard which is ringed by food vendors selling everything from Thai staples like green chicken curry and spicy papaya salad to Japanese and German cuisine. Wash that meal down with Thai or German beers, served in meter-high see-through kegs with blocks of ice in the middle. Thai pop bands, singers and dancers often perform on a large stage nearby. A large covered area is filled with vendors selling hand-made Thai handicrafts, artwork, furniture and home decor, art, clothing, CDs and DVDs.
Do get to Suan Lum sooner rather than later. Plans are afoot to tear it down and build condos and retail on its prime and massive piece of land. This hasn’t happened yet, but Suan Lum is definitely living on borrowed time.
