Muay Thai gets an infusion of Vegas-style glamour
Far from gritty Lumpini Stadium, one organization is attempting to attract a new generation of fight fans
Elite Boxing presents: Thailand vs Challenger Series, 16 January 2010 @ Royal Paragon Hall, Bangkok, Thailand from EliteBoxing on Vimeo.
Watching two fighters pound the daylights out of each other in a Muay Thai ring isn’t for everybody. Though it’s the national sport in Thailand, matches are generally considered a working class affair and fight nights at places like Lumpini Stadium are anything but glamorous -- which is exactly how Thai boxing fans like them.
But one Thai organization, Elite Boxing, is trying to attract a whole new generation of Muay Thai fans by combining the best international level male and female fights with Vegas-style entertainment at luxury venues around Thailand.
Dubbed Thailand vs Challenger, the series is sanctioned by the World Muaythai Council and features Thai fighters taking on fighters from different nations under the theme “Defending National Pride.” Each event will feature martial arts demonstrations, DJs, dancers and musicians to keep the fans entertained between bouts.
Check out the above video to see some of the fighters they’ve got lined up. The first event takes place Saturday, January 16 at Royal Paragon Hall. Tickets available at Thaiticketmajor.com.
