Green Day gives Bangkok a long overdue dose of world class rock
A crowd of all ages turned out in full force to hear Green Day belt out their greatest hits in Bangkok last night, packing Impact Arena to its brim.
After all, it had been well over a year since Bangkok welcomed an internationally-recognized artist. And the city's rock lovers weren't about to let this opportunity pass.
Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong even seemed to be aware of our deprivation, chanting "it's been too long" into the microphone while prowling from one corner of his stage to the other.
If last night's concert could be described in one word, it would definitely be 'explosive.’ Literally. Pyrotechnics accompanied the band's performance as Green Day strummed out hits from the past decade in addition to popular tracks from their most recent album, “21st Century Breakdown."
During the show, Armstrong brought up a number of fans from the audience to join him at the microphone, who he then encouraged to dive off the stage.
The concert ended with an encore lasting nearly 15 minutes.
Green Day has sold over 22 million albums in the United States alone, won three Grammy awards, and is credited with popularizing punk music. They appeared in Bangkok once before, 14 years ago.
Today, still buzzing from last night’s impressive show, Bangkok can't help but wonder how long we will have to wait for the next big name to hit the city, and if it will be of the same pedigree.
