Short, sweet and swinging ... but Tiger misses some skin
All smiles, the embattled golfer blew through Thailand for some 'grip and grin' photos and a losing game of skins
8 November, 2010Despite coming off a disappointing sixth place finish at the Shanghai WGC-HSBC Championships yesterday and earlier losing his position as the world’s number-one-ranked golfer, Tiger Woods was all smiles in Thailand Monday as the nation showered him with star treatment.
After meeting the Thai prime minister and paying his respects to His Majesty the King at Siriraj Hospial by signing the get-well book, the half-Thai golfer was flown in a helicopter to the World Golf Salutes King Bhumibol skins game at Amata Spring Country Club.
Unfortunately for Woods, his string of bad luck continued as he came in last place.
Woods teed off against Thailand's top player, Thongchai Jaidee, as well as Paul Casey of England, Camilo Villegas of Colombia for US$300,000 in prize money.
Villegas won a chip-off on the 18th hole to pick up his fifth skin for a total of $109,800 to finish first. Casey nabbed nine skins for $92,400 and Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee won three for $90,000 to finish third. Woods' only skin came after he knocked a wedge from three feet for a birdie at No. 4, earning $6,600.
Prior to the tournament all players agreed to donate their winnings to charity projects overseen by HM the King. It was the first time Woods has played in Thailand since 2000.
