A Ma Song of the Chinese shrine Jui Tui gets his cheeks pierced by swords during a procession at last year's Vegetarian Festival.

Body-piercing urban hipsters have got nothing on devotees at the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

During this annual religious event, Phuket’s Thai-Chinese residents observe a 10-day vegetarian -- or full-on vegan -- diet as part of a spiritual cleansing and merit-making session. Offerings and rituals are conducted at various Chinese shrines and temples on the island.

OK, nothing shocking about that.

It's the aesthetic displays, such as walking barefoot over hot coals, facial piercing and trips up ladders with bladed rungs performed by entranced devotees known as 'Ma Song' that make the event memorable -- and a spectator challenge of its own kind for the easily nauseated.

This year’s Vegetarian Festival, held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, runs October 17-26. If you need further convincing to check this thing out, take a look at our insane gallery of highlights (above) from last year’s festival. Warning: These photos are graphic.

For the full schedule of events, check out Phuketvegetarian.com. Next week on CNNGo we’ll look at Bangkok's mutilation-free vegetarian events.

It's a great festival, a real buzz to see the street processions, to be at the shrines.. the food is good too - at least for a change. I took a lot of photos this year which can be found on my Phuket blog : http://jamie-monk.blogspot.com/2009/10/vegetarian-festival-procession-photos.html I've been in Phuket 10 years now, and the vegetarian festival never ceases to amaze me! Coming from Malaysia, I am actually involved in rituals such as these, not as a medium but assisting those who go into trances. They are actually acts of purification, though not all temples practice those. My temple has mediums who are possessed by higher deities who do not actually do piercings, but seeing how its done is in fact a very interesting experience

That festival is pretty shocking even for Thais. Don't think we all engage in this stuff! I'm pretty sure it's reserved to Phuket. Great pictures though.
