Gallery: Charms of Bangkok taxis. Literally
Photo blogger Dale Konstanz has compiled a fascinating collection of lucky icons that always ride shotgun with Bangkok's cabbies
By Karla Cripps 11 August, 2009Bangkok's taxis often smell -- of diesel exhaust, body odor, the last passenger's groceries. Or worse. But they do have their charms.
Lucky charms, that is. Very few Bangkok taxis drivers turn an ignition key over without first arming their vehicles with religious icons and offerings, which are pinned on ceilings, attached to dashboards and hung from rear view mirrors. Many can be described as tiny works of art.
For nearly two years, Dale Konstanz has been photographing Bangkok taxi charms and interiors.
"I have several hundred photographs," Konstanz says. "A little over a year ago, a writer friend suggested I start a blog as a way to share stories and photos from inside the taxis. I've been using the blog to compile research about the superstitious and religious objects inside the taxis, as well as to document experiences in the cabs."
