As part of its 83-nation tour, one of the most coveted sporting prizes in the world arrives for the city's viewing pleasure
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva holds the FIFA World Cup trophy following its Thursday arrival in Bangkok.The FIFA World Cup trophy arrived in Bangkok yesterday following a stop in Ho Chi Minh City as part of a world tour that brings the coveted prize to 83 countries.
Diehard football fan Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva received the 18-carat, solid gold trophy in a ceremony at Don Mueang Airport and was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying "I am glad to touch the trophy," as he hoisted it in the air.
The general public can view the FIFA World Cup trophy on Saturday at the Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon, from 10am-8pm, before it heads south to Jakarta.
The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa from June 11-July 11. Though Thailand isn't in the competition Abhisit did offer his take on the event, saying his dream final would involve a European side taking on a South American team.
Abhisit, born in England, has made his support for English club Newcastle clear on many occasions, though he was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying he did not believe England is good enough to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
