Facebook snags 5 million Thailand users

The number of Facebook users in Thailand has more than doubled since January

Facebook's light-speed immersion into the Thai market continues. In a post on Asiancorrespondent.com, social media and tech blogger Jon Russell reports that Thailand recently passed the 5 million mark for Facebook members registered in the country.

With 5,337,920 Facebookers Thailand now accounts for more than 1 percent of the total Facebook population worldwide. Facebook recently announced that it has 500 million members, Russell says.

That's also nearly 8 percent of Thailand's population of 67 million.

These are some pretty impressive figures considering that as recently as January the site only had around 2 million users registered in Thailand.

Russell says there is no doubt that the political protests earlier this year triggered substantial growth and awareness of Facebook in Thailand, though there are other growth drivers such as gaming, increased mobile use and plain old-fashioned word of mouth.
