Bangkok International Festival of Dance and Music pick of the week: Cinderella

Russia's Novosibirsk Ballet Theatre brings its contemporary take on the classic tale to Bangkok's Thailand Cultural Center

Culture-deprived Bangkokians have come out of hiding now that the 12th Bangkok International Festival of Dance and Music is underway.

A six-week celebration of both modern and classical arts, the event began last Saturday with opera “Prince Igor” and runs to October 24. Our top pick for this week is Cinderella, performed by Russia’s Novosibirsk Ballet Theatre on September 17 and 18 at the Thailand Cultural Center.

The organizers say choreographer Kirill Simonov’s interpretation of the classic tale gives it a contemporary touch, which may frighten all you purists out there, but we’re going to give Siminov the benefit of the doubt given this production received the National Theatre Golden Mask Award (2007) for Best Ballet Production.

The Novosibirsk Ballet Theatre is one of the top three ballet companies in Russia, and the dancers will be accompanied by their orchestra under the baton of Theodor Currentzis. For tickets, visit Thaiticketmajor.com.

Some of the other highlight performances at this year’s festival include "Swan Lake" by the Zurich Ballet, "A Christmas Carol" by Northern Ballet Theatre and "Fiesta the Night Away" by Cuba’s King of Salsa.
