World's best guitarists flock to Bangkok

Santana, the Eagles, Clapton and the Deftones are among the huge names hitting the stage here in February and March

Whether you’re into old school 1980s rock, the classics or energetic pop punk, Bangkok’s concert calendar is looking unusually sweet in February and March, with several big names coming up.

Here’s a quick rundown of the highlights:

Deftones -- February 15

Deftones
Californian hard rock band Deftones is passing through Bangkok in February as part of its 2011 tour in support of its latest album, "Diamond Eyes," which was named iTune’s 2010 Rock Record of the Year.

Tickets run from 1,200-1,500 baht each. Concert starts at 8 p.m. at the Thunder Dome in Muang Thong Thani. Visit Thaitickmajor.com for more info.

Eric Clapton -- February 16

Eric Clapton in Bangkok
The day after Deftones, guitar legend Eric Clapton hits the stage for his third visit to Bangkok, following concerts in 1979 and 2007. In his 50-year-plus career, Clapton has pulled in 18 Grammys and become the first musician to be inducted three times into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Tickets from 1,000 to 6,500 baht. Concert starts at 8:30 p.m. at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani. Visit Thaiticketmajor.com for more info.

Eagles -- February 20

Eagles in Bangkok
Judging by the number of Thai pubs featuring musicians who perform "Hotel California" on a nightly basis, Bangkok's upcoming Eagles concert is going to be one hot ticket. Don Henley and the rest of the original band will be here February 20 for a concert at Impact Arena, at 8 p.m.

Tickets from 2,000-7,500 baht each. Visit Thaiticketmajor.com for more info.

New Found Glory -- February 21

New Found Glory in Bangkok
Pop punk band New Found Glory gained a huge following in North America during the EMO/pop punk explosion of the early 2000s, but we haven’t heard much of them here in Thailand. Perhaps that’s why they’re playing in the intimate confines of Bangkok’s Thailand Cultural Center. This is one to hit as it will surely be a high-energy yet personal show given the smaller concert space.

Tickets 1,200-2,000 baht per person at Thaiticketmajor.com.

Santana -- March 1

Santana in Bangkok
Another one of the world's greatest guitarists of all time, 10-time Grammy winner Carlos Santana will be in Bangkok on March 1 as part of his Guitar Heaven 2011 tour in support of his new album. The Latin rock legend has been at it for 40 years, so expect a wide range of past hits from his many successful albums.

Tickets 1,000-4,500 baht each at Thaiticketmajor.com. Concert starts at 8:30 p.m. at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani.

Slash -- March 10

Slash in Bangkok
Tickets haven’t yet gone on sale for this one, so fans of former Guns 'n' Roses lead guitarist Slash will want to keep their eyes on Thaiticketmaster.com for more details to emerge. According to the website, the top-hatted icon will be performing at Impact Muang Thong Thani on March 10 at 7:30 p.m., with several world-class musicians including Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge on vocals/guitar and Bobby Schneck of Weezer and Green Day on rhythm.

Tickets: 1,500 baht per person.
