Bangkok's Ratchaprasong moves from protests to parties

In an effort to restore confidence, Thailand's Tourism Authority is asking Bangkok to return to the scene of the recent chaos for a huge three-day celebration

In its ongoing drive to restore confidence in Bangkok following the deadly May protests, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched a massive weekend celebration dubbed "Smile at Ratchaprasong."

Less than two months ago Ratchaprasong was the main scene of Bangkok’s red shirt protests, prompting some in the Thai online community to call the event ill-timed. But organizers say they want to “let shoppers and  travelers, both in Thailand and overseas, know that the Ratchaprasong area is back to normal and ready for tourism and shopping as usual."

This weekend's expected massive crowds will likely be made up of screaming teens looking to check out the Thai bands taking part in the three days of concerts, on nightly from 6pm to midnight. Acts include Boy Peacemaker, T-Bone, Flure, Buddha Bless and Golf-Mike. Click here for the full schedule.

Other events planned to coincide with Smile Ratchaprasong include artistic performances, sales in the nearby malls, lucky draws and a handicrafts market. It all takes place at the CentralWorld square in front of CentralWorld on Ratchaprasong Road from July 2 to 4 (BTS: Chidlom).
