How to be a Thai celebrity for Halloween

There's no trick or treating in Bangkok. Instead, Halloween is one big party for adults. With this year’s celebration falling on Saturday night, we expect to see some crazy costumes around town.

Don’t have an outfit yet? Put something together in honor of one the country’s biggest newsmakers. These celeb-themed costumes are distinctly Thai, easy to put together and can be picked up for cheap at a Big C or Tesco Lotus near you.

If you’re going to make a political statement, dress as Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij. He’s a good-looking guy and his is an easy look to put together.

Slap on a suit and tie, slick back the hair, rock some classy eyeglasses and you’ll be dressed to whip this country’s economy into shape.

Pick up a schoolboy uniform, throw on some smart canvas runners, attach a paper airplane to a string around your neck. You're Mong Thongdee, the stateless boy born to Burmese parents who won over the country’s heart with his paper airplane skills.

OK, tennis player Paradorn Srichaphan and beauty queen wife Natalie Glebova aren’t the 'it' couple they once were now that they've settled into married life, but this costume is one of the easiest to pull off and nobody will ask who you’re dressed as.

Very easy to do if you’re a foreign woman with a Thai partner. Girl wears an evening grown, sash and crown. The guy wears some sexy short shorts, runners and carries a tennis racket.

Foreign guy with Thai girlfrield? Go for a gender reassignment and let her dress as the man. Hilarity and prizes guaranteed.

Both Thai? No problem, Halloween isn’t bound by gender or race. Just throw on a Miss Canada sash.

Isn’t it annoying how some people use Halloween as an excuse to show how ripped they are or to accentuate their new implants by dressing like a stripper? OK, we don’t really mind all that much either.

But ladies, please skip the tired sexy maid/witch/nurse/angel/schoolgirl look. Instead, show off your smoking body by dressing as Yanin 'Jija' Wismistananda’s break-dancing/fighting character in this year’s 'Raging Phoenix.'

You’re going to need to get a wig if you’re not willing to chop the locks -- hair is what makes this costume stand out. Next, buy a tight green tank, smear yourself with some dirt and fake blood, do up the eyes in black and slap on a push-up bra to knock the gents out. 

Tony Jaa

Hot bodied men looking to show off their guns would do wise to stick with the martial arts theme. Go as Tony Jaa in “Ong Bak 2.”

The film opened in U.S./UK theatres this month, so the costume is a timely tribute to the ripped Mr. Jaa. Tight pants, a straggly wig and some jewelry is all it takes to pull this one off. Shoes optional. (See image above for direction and workout inspiration.)

Lhinping the Baby Panda

This Halloween in Bangkok, expect a few people to dress up as Chiang Mai’s most famous resident, Lhinping the baby panda. We prefer this version from the Ben Stiller film “Tropic Thunder.”

You might need the help of a tailor, as panda costumes aren’t exactly kicking around Big C. Though you could just buy a stuffed giant panda, rip it apart and put it on your head. Lazy and kind of lame, but at the same time rebelliously cool.
