Cross-cultural relationships flourish -- with the help of Japanese yen

A master's student puts Thai-Japanese marriages under the microscope

With the exception of color-coded politics, few subjects ignite debate in Thailand like the issue of cross-cultural relationships.

We’re now eagerly awaiting the fiery responses to an article in Monday's edition of "The Nation" that reports on a study by a master’s student at Khon Kaen University claiming that most Thai women who marry Japanese men do it for money and residency visas.

But while the study found that the brides certainly anticipate financial support from their future husbands, “it is love and understanding that make their marriages last,” the master's student tells "The Nation." 

The study includes interviews with 20 Thai wives and girlfriends of Japanese men, as well as members of 16 families with women who married Japanese men.
