'Harold and Kumar go to Bangkok?' Not out of the question, says director Danny Leiner
Hollywood director/producer Danny Leiner is not a household name in Bangkok. But his films certainly are.
In town for the International Bangkok Film Festival, Leiner’s directing credits include “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Dude, Where’s My Car?” Both were big hits in Thailand -- particularly among the college crowd.
(Oh, and here is our earlier Q&A with Jim Belushi, also in town for the festival). Back to Leiner:
CNNGo: Any possible chance of Harold and Kumar coming to Bangkok?
Danny Leiner: Yes! I couldn't think of a better city, except Amsterdam, and they've been there.
CNNGo: You make very funny films. Anything here in Bangkok seem particularly funny to you?
CNNGo: When you think Bangkok, you think... ?
Leiner: A whirlwind. It's a crazy city.
CNNGo: Where exactly did the word "shibby" come from in "Dude, Where's My Car?"
Leiner: It was a word that Phil Stark, the film's writer, used growing up in Texas. It's a word for everything.
CNNGo: Did you know that one of the most popular party nights here in Bangkok is called “Dudesweet,” which, of course, comes from your movie “Dude, Where’s My Car?” How do you feel about that?
Leiner: Wow. Really? I'm rarely speechless, but you've just stopped me in my tracks. I'm going to look that up later.
