Celebrating the art of the Thai movie poster
"Thailand’s movie posters often morph several scenes from a film into a montage, giving a vague impression of narrative," says Bangkok 1080.Love them or hate them, Thailand’s movie posters and billboards have always been known for their flash and dazzle, viewed today by many as pieces of art worthy of being framed and stuck up on the wall.
Thai film blog Bangkok 1080 has put together a great piece that explores the country’s promotional film artwork through the years, noting: “The descriptive, exaggerated style of painting used to promote the first Thai movies has long been loved by film buffs, but has only recently become regarded as part of Thailand's cultural heritage.”
What’s particularly interesting is Bangkok 1080’s look at the Thai painted works created to promote Western movies, including “ET,” “Jaws” and Star Wars III.” Many are hot ticket items among global film poster collectors, who have fallen in love with the Thai artists' painted takes on iconic American films.
An American design website, io9.com, recently paid homage to Thailand’s painted movie posters too, but focused solely on horror films with the aptly named “80s Thai horror movie posters that will melt your face.” Creepy stuff.
