Bangkok's live rock drought is over! For now

Big names are slated to appear here in coming months. Here's a sneak look

When it comes to international tours, the last few months have been pretty brutal in Bangkok for live rock. Sure, we’ve seen some awesome shows by dozens of fantastic local acts, which deserve all the fan support they can get.

But global big names? This month’s highlight is Mr. Big. Come on now.

Good news, though. The rocking folks at Bangkok event organizer BEC-Tero Entertainment have given us a sneak look at some of the bands coming in 2010 and already we’re liking what we're seeing.

Among the groups set to play are Green Day (January 12), The Killers  and Muse. Dates for the latter two are still to be confirmed -- possibly March or April -- and the groups might even be coming together, says BEC-Tero. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

Turning to old school punk, the legendary Buzzcocks are slated to appear at Club Culture on November 28, a booking that has caught many local fans by pleasant surprise. Now if we could just get the Misfits to come, things would really start looking up.

Still not hard enough? Aussie thrash metal band Truth Corroded will be playing Bangkok’s Rock Pub on November 2.

Alright, we concede, this list is still pretty bare. But it’s a start. According to music bookers, bringing big names to Bangkok is a challenge due to lack of sponsor support that cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore get. Until the corporate big wigs start splashing out some cash, this is as good as it's going to get for Bangkok's live rock fans.
