Wine Connection Deli & Bistro: Top pick for Friday night dinner and drinks

There’s no better sign of a booming new business in Thailand than a line out the door. With so many options, it’s rare to see one for restaurants here, but Wine Connection Deli & Bistro at the new high end K-Village shopping complex is generating buzz with its bargain meals.

A phone call at noon on a Wednesday revealed that all 60 seats allocated for reservations were already taken. The hostess recommended an early walk-in instead.

By 7 p.m. this restaurant -- which doubles as a deli and wine shop -- was packed. It’s great value. Most items on the menu are under 200 baht, including salads, pasta dishes and pizzas. More substantial main courses are also steals. The tasty beef bourguignon, for example, is only 290 baht. It goes down even better with a glass of “premium” house wine for only 140 baht.

Buying by the glass is a good way to test the product. Like it? Pick up the bottle in the adjoining shop.

The dessert menu is decent too, with items like crème bulee and white chocolate cheese cake going for 80 and 110 baht per serving, respectively.  
Wine Connection also just started offering an American Breakfast menu, for 140 baht, served daily from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Though there are several Wine Connection shops all over the city, this is the only one with a restaurant.

It must be said, K-Village's Wine Connection Deli & Bistro isn’t going to win any awards for its food or its rather harried service -- specify the order you want your dishes in and check the bill when you get it -- but if this breezy hotspot keeps these prices, it will be have a loyal following for a long time to come.
