The Flying Chicken: Unicycles, flames and airborne food

Take a break from the Culture One beats and watch your meal fly through the air before it lands on your plate
Flying ChickenThe food at Flying Chicken might not be that great. But who cares when you get to see it brought to your table via unicycle.

We’ve found another reason to head out to the BITEC neighborhood this Saturday in addition to the massive Culture One electronic music festival that everyone is talking about today: Bangkok restaurant the Flying Chicken.

Located across from Culture One venue BITEC on Bangna Road, this is one of those restaurants that has to be seen to be believed. The clue’s in the name: order said airborne fowl and you witness the pre-roasted bird being set aflame, propelled across a stage and retrieved by an acrobatic spike-wearing waiter on a unicycle, occasionally in costume, often with a child on his shoulders.

The bird eventually lands on your table bolt upright, with a flag where its head should be. Ask and you might even get a go on the unicycle yourself.

Set outdoors in a garden complete with a slightly decrepit play-area, look out for the giant glittering chicken on the door and stretch of railway carriage-like karaoke booths.

The far-flung food makes a great backdrop for drinking sessions or family fun, but don’t expect gourmet dining. If you can, bypass the creepy clowns, pre-teen performers, aurally assaulting karaoke and fairly mediocre menu (including, or possibly especially, the frog). But do fly through time and space to get to that chicken.
