Meats, cheeses, breads and more at Bangkok's delectable delis

Craving some fresh bottarga or rabbit terrine? These delis are stuffed tighter than a German sausage with high-quality European imports
Bangkok delisQuintessence features over 300 types of cheese, including French AOC varieties.

Most of Bangkok’s Western restaurants have more style than substance. Fortunately for those craving authentic European flavors, there are a few excellent Bangkok delis stocked with everything from Sardinian cured mullet roe to homemade rillettes. Here are our favorites:

Bei Otto

Attached to a famous German restaurant, Bei Otto sells some of the better baked goods in town (try the pretzels) and a huge variety of meats (the veal sausage is excellent). Other Germanic ingredients are made here too, such as homemade mustard.

1 Sukhumvit Soi 20, BTS: Asok. Tel: +66 (0) 2 262 0892.

Food D'Italia

Food D’Italia supplies high-quality Italian products to some of Bangkok’s best restaurants. But the owner, a Milan native, is more than happy to serve individuals too. Cheeses, sausages and fresh pasta are available, as well as more obscure ingredients such as bottarga -- cured mullet roe -- from Sardinia.

160/1 Soi Promchit Yaek 1, just off Sukhumvit Soi 33, BTS: Prompong. Tel: +66 (0) 2 259 9590.

Gargantua

The French butcher at this tiny Bangkok deli is one of the few domestic producers of elusive and delicious meat products such as rabbit terrine, merguez (Algerian-style spicy lamb sausages) and fresh herb sausages. You'll find choice cuts of beef and veal here too.

10/2 Soi 6 Convent Road. Tel: +66 (0) 2 630 4577.

Cibus

Located in the Gourmet Market in the basement of Siam Paragon, this Italian deli specializes in obscure cheeses, meats, oils and pasta. Prices are high but we don't know anywhere else in town where you can find salt from Trapani or dried chilies from Calabria.

An onsite oven bakes some delicious pizzas and specialist breads and the Italian owner is happy to provide customers with cooking advice.

Basement, Siam Paragon, BTS: Siam. Tel: +66 (0) 2 655 0565.

Quintessence

With over 300 varieties, this is the only stand-alone cheese shop amongst the many Bangkok delis. Check out the walk-in refrigerator, with its artisan and AOC cheeses. There’s also a smaller branch on the fifth floor of Emporium Shopping Center, inside Gourmet Market.

116/1 Soi 23 Sukhumvit Road, BTS: Promphong. Tel: +66 (0) 2 662 3578.
