With inputs from France, Britain and Belgium, Mumbai’s culinary scene grew even more cosmopolitan in 2011. We even got back a sadly missed restaurant space on the beach.

Here goes with a round-up of the best new restaurants of the year.

The Table, Colaba

One of the biggest culinary hits of 2011, The Table is reminiscent of a fancy jazz club, complete with black-and-white floors, green velvet armchairs and sparkling cocktails.

Manned by San Franciscan expat chef Alex Sanchez, the kitchen is as impressive as the decor, sending out French-American dishes like lobster sliders, quesadillas with green pea guacamole and the prettiest beet and mascarpone risotto in the city.

While the Khar branch of this Australian café chain is battling to launch, Aromas Café in Powai is doing brisk business.

It opens at 8 a.m. -- a rare opening hour for anything in Mumbai -- and the sandwiches and salads are fresh.

Sushiwallah: Mumbai chef delivers kick-butt maki

When Le Cordon Bleu (Paris)-educated Shilarna Vaze isn’t playing out her fantasy profession in her head -- Ninja Fairy, a spunky DJ who spins at Goa’s underground jungle parties -- she’s running her sushi delivery and home catering service in Mumbai's suburbs.

But Vaze spins in reality too, rolling a hundred Prawn California rolls a week as Bandra's "Ninja Sushi", a part of the moniker retained from her fantastical alter ego.

Ninja Sushi is a pretty simple operation, working with resources that include a Facebook group, two house maids and a chauffeur with an ice box who delivers spicy tuna, smoked salmon, prawn California, veggie and salmon rolls, with sides of Kikoman soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger.

"Almost like a home project," smiles Vaze.
