While the world may tend to think of Thailand chiefly as a vacation destination, it is, of course, home to a US$300 billion economy and a population of more than 67 million.

Though most of today’s top money makers come from old weath, the country’s laidback atmosphere has given rise to a few serious entrepreneurs.

Here are Thailand’s six coolest self-made millionaires –- and in a couple of cases billionaires -- all over the age of 50.

Pantip Plaza is Bangkok’s most infamous IT-related shopping center. Located in a drab, five-story building on Petchaburi Road, it houses hundreds of shops selling computer hardware, software –- both pirated and legit -- accessories and other tech-related gadgets.

Mixed moods: Tourists party on Khao San Rd near shrines for Bangkok protest dead

Here on Khao San Road, Thailand's backpacker mecca of cheap guest houses and beer bars, young international tourists are engaged in running water fights. They're shooting water pistols at one another and dousing each other with hoses and buckets.

Midway down the road, Thai handlers on top of elephants instruct the beasts to spray water at revelers using their trunks.

There is laughter, cheering, and thumping pop music. Thais and tourists alike wave plastic water pistols. It's all part of the yearly Songkran festival to celebrate the Thai new year.
